Amnesty International is founded in London on 28 May 1961. Just a few weeks later, a group of committed people in Cologne establishes the first Amnesty group in Germany, from which the German section of Amnesty International emerges.
In the presence of German Federal President Christian Wulff, Amnesty International awarded the 6th Human Rights Award to human rights defender Abel Barrera Hernández and the Tlachinollan Human Rights Centre from Mexico, which he founded. The award ceremony took place during the ‘Festival for Human Rights’ on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Amnesty International in Berlin.
